【Beautiful Harmony】
In this piece's beginning it was not so harmonious. However, the more I played it, the more harmony and consonance was introduced. As I began to develop the piece, my composition began to alternate between consonance and dissonance, all in order to achieve the end result of balance and harmony. If it was all consonant, how would I be able to demonstrate what consonance is? We must have dissonance in order to show contrast and to create this character called “harmony”.
One day, I visited my friend's house, and while I was there noticed that his child came back from school in a rather lifeless state. I asked him why he seemed so down, and he replied, “The test scores were released.” I asked how well he scored, and he said “I got a 99.” I was awed, “Very good! When I was in school, achieving that was hard.” “I'm sorry”, he replied, “There are 60 students in our class and 50 of them got 100!”
No one can be considered genius if everyone in the class scores top marks, because then performance which would normally be considered genius is simply the standard. Overseas, I see that it is not the goal to train the greatest genius, but to bring professional development out of your natural genius and allow it to peak in one area. Even a true genius cannot do everything and be absolutely perfect. As incredible as it is that people such as Mozart and Einstein were able to make such massive leaps in their fields, they could not do everything either. If those on the exam with a 99 are overshadowed by the majority with a score of 100, even a 99 will be seen as mediocre.
Harmony and disharmony are actually at an edge, sometimes harmony occurred from disharmony, it is particularly valuable, feeling is particularly good, if the crowd group was in a bad class, which has a No.1 student, all subjects got 100 scores, but if you were in a good class, always ranked the last one, the child would not have self-confidence. So sometimes in the end what is good what is bad, how to show harmony without disharmony , that child in the bad class got No.1 score in exam, precisely because of the presence of other worse children, he seemed better. If in a class, 50 students got 100 scores in exam, it was depressed, because you are not the only one.
My thoughts are such: just as in life, in music there exists both harmony and dissonance. My piece “Beautiful Harmony” seeks to show that it is good to be safe and happy, but that absolute harmony and perfection is impossible. We are bound to go through rough patches, and from these we can find a sort of comparative harmony.
I often tell my children that they don't need to try to satisfy me by trying to surpass every standard. There are no real standards, and the ones that we believe exist are simply ones which we perceive to be real. I don't require that my children receive straight A's, and that it doesn't matter if you happen to get a B. In life, you are bound to receive different grades, whether for work, school, or in friendship. If a person who is used to perfection suddenly experiences failure, they will feel disproportionally bad. Life is a long term relay race, a period of going over long distances section by section. Nobody knows that will happen until you reach the final stretch. It is useless to be able to run fast in the beginning, but falter halfway through. One should practice the ability to withstand setbacks. Although misfortune and setbacks will seem completely negative at the time, in the end they can bring improvement to you.
I give this example: many people do not like to have their spirits dampened by others, but everyone has at one point experienced it. Although people are like this, it is even worse to be angered by someone. In fact, when fuel is added to people's spirits there is the chance that they will burn up and be destroyed. Dampened spirits are more natural, and whether it is harmonious or dissonant, right or wrong, good or bad, life needs contrast in order to make itself symmetrical. We must use our own abilities in order to adjust to life and stay in harmony. Thus, when I created this piece I used many different chords for contrast, whether or not they were harmonious.
